Chapter 20
Jack
âDo you want the good news or the bad news?â
Freddie swept into the room like a whirlwind. I was about to reprimand him for busting into our room this early. Luckily, Eliza was in the shower, because she was already twitchy enough about privacy. One look at Freddieâs face and I decided against it. From his firmly set jaw, I had a hunch it was more a choice between bad news and worse news.
I opened my mouth, but he continued without waiting for an answer, or pausing for breath. âRylixa offered to host a party for us the night after the Emortuus Ball, to celebrate our engagement.â
âIs that the good news or the bad news?â I joked. Freddie glowered at me, and I quickly sobered. âAll right. Why do you look like youâve been invited to your own funeral instead?â
Freddie slumped down on the bed. âBecause I took your advice and told Maya the truth.â
I held up my hand. âAh, no you donât. If youâd taken my advice, you would have told her the truth straight away. I didnât tell you to propose to her.â
âWhatever. It doesnât matter now. None of it does. She is so mad, Jack. Iâve never seen her so angry. Sheâs called the whole engagement off. If she didnât want to be here for Eliza, I think she would have left completely.â
âIâm sure once she cools off you can explain properly. Get everything out in the open.â
âWhat if Iâve lost her?â he said so quietly I almost didnât hear him.
âI think itâs too early to be thinking like that, mate,â I said, patting his shoulder.
Hope flickered in his eyes. âYou think?â
âThis has all come out of the blue for her. She needs to process. Plus, it wasnât the best timing, because sheâs facilitating this scan on Eliza today. I expect she is anxious about it. Once thatâs taken care of and sheâs had time to calm down, you can talk. Iâm sure sheâll come around.â
He nodded, although he still didnât look entirely convinced. âDo you want the good news?â
There is actually some good news? I smiled. âSure.â
âI managed to track down Scarlett and the girls. I spoke to Scarlett for all of five seconds, but they are fine.â
âThatâs a relief,â I said, then peered at him. âDid you do that legitimately?â
Freddie dipped his head to avoid my gaze. âThere were a few blocks in my way, but nothing major.â
âMy dad isnât going to come knocking down the door, is he?â
At the mention of my father, he raised his eyebrows, but I stopped him. âLater. Letâs get this scan done first.â
