Chapter 20

Jack

“Do you want the good news or the bad news?”

Freddie swept into the room like a whirlwind. I was about to reprimand him for busting into our room this early. Luckily, Eliza was in the shower, because she was already twitchy enough about privacy. One look at Freddie’s face and I decided against it. From his firmly set jaw, I had a hunch it was more a choice between bad news and worse news.

I opened my mouth, but he continued without waiting for an answer, or pausing for breath. “Rylixa offered to host a party for us the night after the Emortuus Ball, to celebrate our engagement.”

“Is that the good news or the bad news?” I joked. Freddie glowered at me, and I quickly sobered. “All right. Why do you look like you’ve been invited to your own funeral instead?”

Freddie slumped down on the bed. “Because I took your advice and told Maya the truth.”

I held up my hand. “Ah, no you don’t. If you’d taken my advice, you would have told her the truth straight away. I didn’t tell you to propose to her.”

“Whatever. It doesn’t matter now. None of it does. She is so mad, Jack. I’ve never seen her so angry. She’s called the whole engagement off. If she didn’t want to be here for Eliza, I think she would have left completely.”

“I’m sure once she cools off you can explain properly. Get everything out in the open.”

“What if I’ve lost her?” he said so quietly I almost didn’t hear him.

“I think it’s too early to be thinking like that, mate,” I said, patting his shoulder.

Hope flickered in his eyes. “You think?”

“This has all come out of the blue for her. She needs to process. Plus, it wasn’t the best timing, because she’s facilitating this scan on Eliza today. I expect she is anxious about it. Once that’s taken care of and she’s had time to calm down, you can talk. I’m sure she’ll come around.”

He nodded, although he still didn’t look entirely convinced. “Do you want the good news?”

There is actually some good news? I smiled. “Sure.”

“I managed to track down Scarlett and the girls. I spoke to Scarlett for all of five seconds, but they are fine.”

“That’s a relief,” I said, then peered at him. “Did you do that legitimately?”

Freddie dipped his head to avoid my gaze. “There were a few blocks in my way, but nothing major.”

“My dad isn’t going to come knocking down the door, is he?”

At the mention of my father, he raised his eyebrows, but I stopped him. “Later. Let’s get this scan done first.”
